Gufa - Cave / Pusthak - Book

The most famous and oldest pilgrimage place in Bilaspur, Vyas Gufa is a cave situated on the left bank of River Sutlej, at an altitude of 610 meters above sea level. It is believed to be the cave where Maharshi Vyas, performed his meditation and penance. It lies between the old and new Bilaspur Township. According to the folklore, Bilaspur was once known as Vyaspur, after the Rishi's name. It is about 0.5 Km. distance from district head quarters.

Astonished to look at that cave from outside; the hill was in a structure of a massive book,
even the pages were visible. The hill is called Vyas pothi on the accounts of river Saraswati
also Rock formation inside the Vyas Gufa appears to resemble the orderly stacking of palm
leave manuscripts - oldest writing material and is worshipped as Vyas Pusthak.

Saraswathi River Changing her Course / Temple

Vyasa was born on an island in the Yamuna. And worked on the banks of the River Saraswathi. Look at the map to see how close they were to each other and also to IndraPrastha.

“The Saraswati waterfall lies at 10,000 ft. above sea level, about four km from the holy shrine of Badrinath. It is very close to the Indo-Tibetan border.Vyas Muni’s hallowed cave was barely 100 sq. ft. in area. At one  end was a rounded stone with faint markings, described as “3,000 year old inscriptions” by the local guide. But Vyasji had a problem. He could not concentrate – with a frothing, foaming, furiously gushing river within hearing range. So, he prayed fervently to Mother Saraswati, begging her to calm down and assist him in his creative persuits. Lo! The river Saraswati changed her course and were underground, only to emerge hundreds of miles away at the Sangam (confluence) at Allahabad, as goes the legend.
